8069 WJ (Warwick/Jack) Reid

Jack, Bob Morton, Dennis Dart

May 1968 – Left RMC after third year leaving behind a disappointed Major and two crushed members of the ‘Gold Line’ (Mort and Pole) “we could have been contenders”.

1968 – Returned to parent’s house in Penticton BC and to my high school sweetheart – Lyn Riley

Fall 1968 – Began third year of Mechanical Engineering at University of British Columbia and become a member of the UBC Thunderbirds Junior Varsity team hockey.  Once again Fluid Mechanics and Hockey does me in!

Summer 69 - I returned to Penticton and began working as a surveyor at Brenda Mines (note, I was the only sup writer in Surveying in 2nd Year) laying out concrete pipe for the tailings pond at the mine.

Fall 69 - I wisely remuster to Physical Education.

November of 70 – I married Lyn Riley -My friends have told me several times – marrying Lyn – was by far and away the best decision I ever made.

1971- Become a member of the UBC Thunderbirds Varsity hockey team.

1973 - I finally get an undergraduate degree in Physical Education with a Commerce minor.

1973 - Not having had quite my fill of Hockey, I applied to the Graduate School of Business at UBC and was accepted into the MBA program.

The hockey highlight of those years was the Thunderbird’s trip to China in December of 1973. Those interested can find the NFB documentary of our trip on You Tube “Thunderbirds in China”

1974 - Lyn and I were blessed with the first of our two children, Andrea, born in 1974 who is a physiotherapist teaching and practicing at the Sport Medicine clinic and UBC. Andrea is the mother of three boys, all at Vancouver College, the alma mater of their father.

Our son, Matt, was born in 1978 and is equally immersed in Hockey as President of the UBC Thunderbird Hockey Alumni (Matt and I are the only father son Thunderbirds alumni) in addition to his real job a Managing partner of one of the largest fitness centers in downtown Vancouver. He is the father of two young girls.

1975 – I received my MBA in Finance and Marketing and got my first and last real job at elan Datamakers as a Sales rep. My friend in the I.T. Sector says I don’t have 50 years experience; I have one year’s experience 50 times. Over time, I became the President of elan and the second largest shareholder.

1980 - Lyn and I purchase a ski-in-ski-out condo at Apex Mountain Resort near Penticton where we have hosted a couple of RMC 69ers (Blair Trousdell and Dennis Dart). Lyn and I and the family have spent every Christmas since at Apex.

1986 - We sold elan Datamakers ltd. to Horton Maritime Engineering and then merged the two companies as Horton Trading Ltd. I was promoted to President of HTL and invited Class of 69er Doug Smith to join our board. I continue to act as Chairman of the board of HTL.

1992 – I support Smitty in the purchasing of the assets of a chapter 11 flexible packaging company to create Adeptech.

2001 – Along with classmates Smitty, Pole and Gerry Gainer I attend the first of at least 25 annual RMC 69er Golf Outings in Monterey CA.

2004 – Lyn and I were looking to reestablish a footprint in the south Okanagan, we purchased a condo on Lake Osoyoos in Osoyoos.  By coincidence, business partners from Penticton approached HTL with a proposal to develop a nine-hole golf course (Sonora Dunes) at the same time. Subsequently, Osoyoos was host to the RMC 69ers annual golf in 2007. Most summers are now spent in Osoyoos, golfing, biking and swimming.

2009 to Present For the last 15 years, Lyn and I have been wintering in Rancho Mirage, where we take out a seasonal golf membership at Rancho Las Palmas, a golfer friendly resort.

Through all this Old Timers Hockey was a major theme including many tournaments with the UBC Alumni and Burnaby Stealers. A major annual event is the Charles Schulz Snoopy Oldtimers Hockey tournament in Santa Rosa.

One of my avocations consists of racing thoroughbred racehorses.  In 1990, after several years of partnership with fellow UBC Hockey alumni and many tries, we finally won a minor Stakes race ($66K) with a 3-year-old filly named after my mother, Regal Grace.  Many of Lyn’s and my vacations over the last forty years have included trips to many of the more famous racetracks in the world, including Royal Ascot, this year.
