After graduation in 1969, I was posted to the RCR in London Ontario along with Ron Dickenson and George Maday.
In early 1971, prior to attending Logistic courses, I was posted to Shelburne Nova Scotia. After several months, I attended Camp Borden to complete the requisite Logistics’ courses.
While in Camp Borden, I met Noella, an Air Force operating room nurse, who was also on course from her Shearwater, Nova Scotia posting. It was love at first sight!
We relocated to Dundas where I began working at Stelco in the finance division. Noella selected a position as head operating room nurse for open heart surgery at the Hamilton General Hospital.
During my career at Stelco I worked in several capacities under the financial umbrella. In my spare time I became a Certified General Accountant and ultimately a Certified Professional Accountant. (CPA).
Noella and I decided to start a family and in 1979,
subsequently our daughter Nicole was born.
As Nicole grew to a beautiful young lady she was very interested in
sports and especially baseball. This
provided me with the opportunity to coach her ball teams over a period of
several years. One year I also coached
the All-Star team. A very talented group
who made it to the Canadian Championships held in Victoria. While there I visited Royal Roads with Noella
and Nicole, they both loved the campus and were particularly impressed with the
Castle and Japanese Gardens.
In 2005 Nicole married Chad Clemmer from Elmira, ONT. They proceeded to have 5 lovely girls, now, Lindsay 17, Maddy 15, Chloe 14 and identical twins Ami and Aly 12.
We also enjoyed travel, including a spectacular trip through Europe and several cruises.
In February of 2014, Noella was
diagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer. After
her initial treatment had begun in earnest, including 2 surgeries, radiation
and chemo infusions, we decided to move to Elmira to be close to Nicole, Chad
and our granddaughters. With Noella effectively fighting her cancer for close
to 9 years we were able to take some of the focus off Noella’s journey and
enjoy the maximum pleasure being a part of our granddaughter’s everyday lives. Sadly,
Noella succumbed to her cancer on October 14th, 2022. We had been married 50 years.
Noella suffered in silence and never once complained. She was my rock.
I’m still in Elmira. I have
recently had both hips replaced and am hoping to return to golfing and biking
in the near future.
My four legged friend, Archie, has provided laughter, comfort and companionship.
