RMC degree:  BEng (Mechanical)

Branch of the Forces: Originally Royal Canadian Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (RCEME) later

renamed to Land Ordnance Engineering (LORE)

1969: RCEME School Kingston – RCEME Fourth Phase Course

1970-1972: RMC military faculty member (MASc obtained from RMC via part-time studies)

1972-74:  1 Combat Group Headquarters, Calgary – Maintenance Liaison Officer

1974-1977: University of Calgary - doctoral studies – PhD in Mechanical Engineering

In order to keep my family eating regularly while a PhD student, I held the following 2 executive positions:

1975-1976: Mohawk Gas Station, Calgary – Gas Pump Attendant (6PM-2AM)

1976-1977: Mac’s Milk Store, Calgary – Clerk (7PM-midnight)

1977-2008: Civilian professor in the RMC Mechanical Engineering Department

1985-1986: Visiting Professor – Cranfield Institute of Technology, UK

1996-1999: Head, RMC Department of Mechanical Engineering

1984-2008: President, Nexum Research Corporation Inc Kingston

Research Work:  University faculty members carry out research as part of their academic duties.  This is

the mechanism which keeps them up-to-date in their disciplines, and is particularly important for

 engineering and science faculty

My research group of 10-12 engineers and technicians carried out combustion, engine and fuel

research.  In the 1980s only DND research projects could be carried out at RMC.  My group did work

for both DND and outside agencies.  All the DND research projects were done at RMC, while research

for non-DND agencies was done at Nexum Research Corporation, a separate contract research

laboratory in Kingston.  Research projects were contracted with General Motors, Standard Oil of Ohio,

BP, Rolls Royce Industrial and Marine Division, Pratt & Whitney Canada, Natural Resources Canada,

Transport Canada, the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Publications:  Technical papers on engines and fuels.

Books: Mechanical Engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada,

1876-2018

MV Cordite; Robert Owen King: Engineer, Scientist and Inventor (2023).

Most Interesting Committee Membership: NATO Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development (1992-1997),

Most interesting (but Unsolicited) Job Offer: Cashier and Bouncer at the Golden Girls Massage Parlour [vetoed by Brenda, which was just as well, because the police shut it down a few months later]

Career low Point: While pumping gas at 1AM in my role as a gas jockey in Calgary, seeing a drunk on the other side of the parking lot urinate all over the side of my car.  Latest time to go for a car wash – 2:15 AM after my shift ended at the gas station.

Most Interesting Business Training Received:  Just after graduation, I was persuaded by classmate Dana Fergusion to participate in his latest (but not, by far, his last) business scheme – selling AmSani Blue toilet bowl sanitizer door to door in Kingston.  How could you lose with a product “guaranteed for a thousand flushes or your money back”?   After failing to make my fortune in the toilet bowl trade I decided on an academic career instead.

 Retirement (2008): Kingston, Ontario.

Hobbies: Woodworking, genealogy
