1969 Review

How to begin and so many years!

After graduation in 1969, I married my sweetheart Polly and headed off for a rather short period of flight training before the government no longer needed my services as a jet jockey.

I transferred to the new Security Branch (to become the Intelligence Branch in 1982).and started my Intelligence career. Over the years, my domestic postings included Petawawa, Borden (twice), and NDHQ (numerous times, including time in the Privy Council Office and NDHQ Policy). Of the major highlights, four come to mind:

·         1973-1975 RMC Master of Arts in War Studies

·         1978-1982 Washington D.C. where my son Alex was born and I served as a Canadian Forces Intelligence Officer accredited to the Defense Intelligence Agency (and others)

·         1987-1988 Seven months on course at the NATO Defense College in Rome, Italy

·         1988-1992 The NATO Integrated Military Staff Intelligence Division at Brussels, Belgium

After retiring from the Canadian Forces in 2001, we took up permanent residence in New Edinburgh (Ottawa) and I began a civilian intelligence career at Citizenship and Immigration Canada (later to become the Canada Border Services Agency), where I covered irregular migration, boat smuggling activities, and counter proliferation. I retired for good, after 50 years total service, in 2014.

Retirement has been good to both of us, with lots of travel to many different destinations (including two months each winter at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina) and staying in contact with family and close friends. .I myself have kept busy with golfing (mediocre), trying to exercise and stay in shape, prolific reading, and keeping up with worldwide defence and security issues,

Life has been great and I hope it will remain so for many years to come! I am particularly proud of being a ‘69er. a true band of brothers!
