Graduated from RMC with a degree in Honours Economics and Commerce

Served with third Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (3 RCHA) in Winnipeg and Shilo from 1969 to 1973

 


Married in 1970 to Donna Hendren (schoolteacher). One son Kent who is married to Chie, who works for Transport Canada. Kent runs a microbrewery (The Wheelhouse Brewing Company) with two partners in Prince Rupert, BC. Kent and Chie have two children, Kiri14 and Toshi 12.

Obtained Bachelor of Laws degree from Queen’s University from 1973 to 1976, but never wrote the bar exams or practiced.

Obtained Chartered Accountant designation in 1979 working at KPMG in Kingston from 1976 to 1980

Worked for Bray Rivet (a manufacturing company) as Financial Controller in Gananoque from1980 to 1982

Married in 1981 to Eugenie McMahon (chartered accountant) One son Kyle who works for Alstom in IT in Kingston, Ontario and is married to Jessica  who also works for Alstom in Health and Safety.. They have one daughter Norah 6.

Worked for Bombardier and predecessor companies (Venture Trans, UTDC) from 1982 to 2012 retiring as VP Finance in one of their rail divisions. Worked in Canada, the UK, the US, and Germany during that time and travelled to much of the globe.

Currently “retired” but volunteering with the following organizations:

1) RCHA Brigade Association Kingston-Treasurer

2) RMC Alumni Association Kingston Branch-President and Treasurer

3) Seniors Citizen Association Branch 523 Kingston-Treasurer

4) Wheelhouse Brewery Prince Rupert, BC-Chief Financial Officer

Hobbies; Playing Bridge, Pickleball, and travelling.

Partner is Sue McCans (Registered Nurse) who trained at Kingston General Hospital when we were cadets at RMC

(Bill) Lye College of Entry: Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean The   Review  1969        Le Défilé  1967          I, like several of us, was a Service (Army) brat, ending up in Chilliwack, BC, where I joined the Royal Canadian Army Cadets, (RCAC), 1725 RCE Cadet Corps in 1961.  It was here in 1962 that I first met Gord Hamilton, the Cadet Pipe Major of the Victoria, BC, RCAC Canadian Scottish Regiment Cadet Corps at a British Columbia Cadet Corps Tattoo, starting a lifelong friendship there, at CMR, at RMC, in the RCE and latterly as business partners and ski buddies. After only two weeks in Soest, Germany, where my dad had recently been posted after Chilliwack, I returned to Canada and met up again with Gord on 3 September, 1964 at CMR, neither of us having known that the other had even applied.   8058 Terry Melnyk 1969 Review Somewhat to my surprise, I completed 37 years in the CF as an artillery officer.  Regimental duty with 3 RCHA in Shilo and Winnipeg and 5 RALC in Valcartier. A tour in Cyprus with 5 RALC and a posting as Liaison Officer with the a US Army research institution in New Jersey pretty much sum up my foreign duties.  My career as an artillery officer crested when an appointment as Battery Commander (HQ Battery with 5 RALC) was cancelled when I slipped a disk in my back for the second time and was put on extended medical category.  That, of course, eventually healed but left me with permanent nerve damage in one leg, happily with no particular mobility issues or pain.  I was by then in competition with younger, keener (and better probably) officers for the key postings and so I settled into the life as a staff officer.
