Following Young Officer training as a Military Engineer, I was posted to the Base Construction Engineering Section at CFB Uplands and worked there for three years before being posted to 4 Field Squadron in Lahr Germany. At Uplands, I worked in engineering and production roles and became a Professional Engineer.
In 1970, Mary Lou, the Queens grad that I dated in fourth year, and I got married. In the 54 years since, we have had three children and five outstanding grandchildren.
While working in the field squadron, I decided to leave the military at the end of my 4 year commitment. We returned to Canada and I completed a two year MBA program at Queens. This led to 32 years of good employment with Stelco in Hamilton ON.
I worked in operations and progressed through the organization eventually working as a Superintendent or Mill Manager in several areas of the plant. Within a few months of my retirement, I decided to work again and quickly found new employment as Operations Manager in a smaller firm.
After 5 years with that company, a consultant asked me to take a job performing final acceptance tests on equipment in a new steel mill being built in Alabama. This work involved working with the German builder and their customer to ensure that the performance specifications on the state-of-the-art equipment had been met. We lived in Mobile Alabama for approximately a year and had a great chance to learn about life in the southern USA.
Mary Lou and I have lived in Grimsby ON for most of our lives and have enjoyed life in Niagara greatly. I have been active in our local Rotary club and in our church. Most of our summers have been spent at our cottage with our family or river cruising on European waterways.
